A Bright Idea: Specify Concrete
Four-page publication outlines how concrete pavements save energy and enhance safety because they reflect more light than dark surfaces. Streets, parking lots, and sidewalks are brighter at night and require less artificial light to achieve the same level of illumination. Up to 27% of light is reflected from a concrete surface compared with as little as 5% of light from asphalt pavement.

The
Environmental Council of Concrete Organizations (ECCO) hosted a Sustainability
Workshop in Chicago on September 18-19, 2002.
The purpose of the workshop was two-fold: 1) to provide ECCO members with
technical information to use now in their promotion and advocacy efforts, and 2)
to start the review process for technical information to be presented in the
book-in-progress:
The Environmental Benefits of Concrete (working title).
The
keynote speaker was Dr. Jacqueline Glass of Oxford Brookes University, United
Kingdom. Presentations were designed for four different audiences: public works
officials, structural engineers, environmental engineers, and architects.
Participants received a CD-ROM with presentation materials from the workshop for
use in promotion and education efforts.
This
CD contains all the material presented at the workshop, in PowerPoint format for
use by regional promoters and engineers.
